Project Description:
The scope of our work included the performance of on-site inspections and laboratory testing to determine the mechanical properties of the structural materials of a two-storey building with a basement and rooftop level, constructed with load-bearing masonry and currently used as a residence. Core samples were extracted and Schmidt-hammer testing was conducted, in accordance with the provisions of the Greek Code for Structural Interventions for Masonry buildings (KADET), in order to determine the mechanical characteristics of the masonry units, such as compressive strength, as well as those of the masonry mortar. The compressive strength of the masonry units and the flexural strength of the mortar samples were determined through testing at a specialised laboratory. Exploratory openings were formed in masonry piers and timber floors, at a number of locations specified by KADET, in order to determine the construction method and structural configuration. Exploratory openings and reinforcement scans were performed at locations where the configuration of the load-bearing structure was not visible, in order to establish an accurate understanding of the building’s structural system. The project was completed with the submission of a detailed report presenting the test results, the structural survey findings, the macroscopic observations, and the recorded pathologies of the building.
